Kalkidan is born and raised in Addis Ababa. She is 9 years old girl born on 6/11/2009 E.C (dd/mm/y). She joined CTE Sponsorship program in 2015E.C. Kalkidan is currently grade two student. Her father was a carpenter. While he was working he had an electrical hazard. He stayed at the hospital for more than 10 months. He couldn’t move on his own. His wife had to be there for him. After he was discharged from the hospital; he had to follow up his treatment as an outpatient. He is paralyzed and he has to sit on a wheel chair. Recently, he started moving by walking aids. His wife is the bread winner. She manages the house by working as a daily labor, works in people homes as a maid in the day time and works on petty trade. She is participating in a self-help group at CTE self-help program.
As they were working on the petty trade; an opportunity came to them by CTE. A special support (fund) was given to them. They say this support came to them in a critical time to meet their need.
In Ethiopia, there were internal conflicts going on. Due to this reason the roads were blocked. Items and stuffs for purchase weren’t getting into the city. If the money wasn’t given to them; they had to wait until the road was opened. They only had 20 items on hand. They had to wait to stock the items because they had no money to purchase. Ezana the mother of Kalkidan says “There were a lot of things that discouraged us. Starting from people to situations. People told me & asked, “Why do you work on this? It’s not profitable to work in this space” and some other things. We were so happy. It is a fortunate situation for our family and it is good to know & have someone who sees & supports the effort you make.” Ezana is selling coal (Fire charcoal) in retail and wholesale & plan to sell potatoes. She plans to take loan from her SHG and expand her business.
